that's plenty critical for excellent prints). And be reasonable when evaluating your images (I check focus of my images at 50% or 33% magnification on my graphics quality computer monitor. So it's unlikely the lens is "registered" in older versions of the camera's firmware.ĭo some tests, as described above, before jumping in to do an MFA. The 7D is a five year old model and that lens has only been introduced within the last year.

I don't know for certain, but suspect you will need to update the camera's firmware before you can MFA a Tamron SP 150-600mm VC USD on your camera. It's very unlikely the exact same setting will be the most ideal throughout the zoom's range of focal lengths. Or you will need to adjust for a particular focal length, such as the longer end of the zoom if that's where you use it most. With a zoom, you will likely need to do some tests at different focal length settings (each end of the range and one in the middle), and then compromise on a setting. Still, it can be the last little bit of fine tuning to make the lens and camera work together to focus as best possible. In many cases, you are more likely to see improvement in your images with good techniques steadying the shot, stopping down a little, using the lens hood, and by not unnecessarily using cheap (or any) "protection" filters, than you will see from focus calibration. you are unlikely to see much difference so long as a lens is reasonably well calibrated by the factory and has been knocked out of adjustment by the time you buy it. and/or just share your images online at even lower Internet resolutions. If instead you make 8x10s, 11x14s and 13x19s. At 100% a 7D image on most modern computer monitors (which render 96 pixels per inch when set to native resolution) is equivalent to making a five foot wide print with that image! Seriously! How often do you make prints anywhere near that large? A few years ago - before MFA - the manufacturers' service departments were often flooded with warranty requests for focus fine tuning. People zoom in to 100, 200, 400% and then freak out if the image isn't super sharp. IMO, this is manufacturers' response to the incredibly overly critical review of digital images, made possible only because it's so easy now to view our images at ridiculously high magnifications on our computer monitors. Sigma is now offering some lenses that you can calibrate, too. MFA is just provided so that users can do much of it themselves and avoid having to send their gear in for service.

It is possible for lenses and cameras to be calibrated and adjusted by professional techs to give peak autofocus performance. MFA is sort of the "sprinkles on top of the icing on the cupcake". (Note: 7DII and some other more recent models now use MFA "2.0", which can be used with up to 40 lenses, allows for two adjustments on zooms, and is lens-serial-number-specific so you could have different adjustments for different EF 50/1.4 USM lenses, for example.) It also is lens-model-specific, so if you were to adjust an EF 50/1.4 USM lens on the camera, the exact same adjustment would be applied to all EF 50/1.4 USM lenses used on the camera. This allows up to 20 lenses to be adjusted and one adjustment per lens (even zooms). Your 7D has the first version of Canon Micro Focus Adjust (MFA). Really large aperture and/or longer focal length lenses, both where DoF can be really shallow, is when calibration can be most important. Depth of field will hide minor focus errors. If you shoot with the lens stopped down much of the time, you likely will see little benefit from it. No big deal, really.Īs to lens calibration, it isn't always needed. also be sure your battery is fully charged so camera won't accidentally shut down in mid-update, which takes about 5 minutes at most. this is to be sure you got a complete download, but I have to say I've never had a problem.
